GMSN changes Discussion – 10 minutes have been allowed for the GMSN class to come together and discuss the changes to their program.

Hey Everyone,

I wanted to send out some information on some great health clinics coming up where students can volunteer and provide some health screening services. (Big thanks to Lucas who brought this to my attention last semester!) The organization is called Remote Area Medical (RAM) they have a national and California website as well as a facebook page (links provided at the bottom).

There are two medical clinics coming up in the area this Spring (dates/details below). RAM CA will provide free vision, dental, and medical services at its events. I contacted RAM to find out what types of volunteer services nursing students are able to provide at these events.

1st year nursing students:

Unable to provide any direct care.

Help direct patients to different locations

Other general volunteer duties (this is still a great opportunity!)

2nd year nursing students:

Health screenings blood pressures, vision screening etc.

Dental assisting

This would be a great opportunity for all nursing students to attend and volunteer at an event like this, even if you are unable to provide any medical services. What better way to spend your spring break! Okay, perhaps a trip to Hawaii drinking Mai Tai’s on the beach would be better, but lets face it, it’s unlikely that’s where you will be

Below are the dates and locations for the two clinics in our area. Unfortunately, we are unable to sign up as a group, so each individual must sign up through the website. The clinic is offered for 4 days and you do not have to volunteer for all 4 days. When you register to volunteer enter in the dates that you would like to volunteer. The shifts begin around 5-5:30am and you should expect to be there till about 5:30-6pm. The times are not pre-determined because it depends on the number of patients they see. Generally you are done around 5:30, but please be flexible! If you would really love to volunteer, but absolutely cannot commit to that time frame, please enter the time along with the date(s) you are available in the comments section when you register (note: when you register the comments box says “license comments” use this space to enter the info.

I hope many of you will take advantage of this opportunity! Register soon, as space does fill up for volunteers.

NSA will be holding a Bone Marrow donation drive at the San Francisco State University!

Message below from Andrea, NSA Community Health Co-Director
I really want to make this a huge success, since it’s for such a great cause.
I have attached a document that has a lot of information about what Be The Match, what it means to register and why this is such an important cause.

Some additional info: what we are asking people to do is sign up for the Bone Marrow donation registry. What this entails is that they get swabbed (the inside of their mouth) and are placed on a registry to see if they are a match for anyone who needs a bone marrow transplant. Getting registered and swabbed is all completely painless If they are found to be a match for someone at some point, then they would actually be a candidate for the actual bone marrow donation. By signing up to be on the registry they are not required to donate if they are found to be a match, however, they do want people to be serious about it because it costs about $100 to register each person.

Here are some of the pertinent details:

The drive is set for Wednesday, February 15th from 10:30-1:30 in Rosa Parks D

For the day of the drive we need about 7 volunteers to help in the room with set-up/break-down, greeting and helping recruit people to register. There is a 1 hour training video for volunteers to watch (I know it sounds daunting, but it’s actually quite interesting and informative about the donation process). If anyone is interested and available to volunteer, please email me.

In addition to holding the drive we also need to do some fundraising to help off-set the costs of registering a person. As I mentioned earlier, it costs about $100 to register each person. For the fundraising portion, I have set up a webpage where people can donate money. There is a link that people can send to friends and family for donations and you can also add a link to your facebook page, if you choose. I will send a separate email to forward out with the fundraising info.

Here is a link to Be The Match if you want more info:
http://www.bethematchfoundation.org

Here is the link for the fundraising:
http://www.bethematchfoundation.org/goto/sfnursing

Thank you,

Hey everyone, there is a Nursing Student Association meeting in Burk Hall 408 TODAY, 12-2-11 from 1130 to 1200 and again from 1200 to 1300.

Topics to be covered include:

N-Prep Committees
Annie (and myself) will be presenting information regarding the January 23rd “N-Prep” and we will be forming committees to organize this event! If you want to help pass on your knowledge to the incoming spring level 1 students then please show up =).

Alek mentioned at the last NSA meeting that he would have 3 sample NSA shirts ready by today to show off to the students. Please come give your input on which shirt design we should go with!

AS Funding
Albert has found us money! Come find out how and why =).

Hey SFSU Nursing students! It’s been vocalized that many of you would be more willing to attend our meetings if you knew what we would be discussing in advance. So here’s the information about this next meeting:

It’ll be held in Burk Hall room 408 from 11am-1pm and the lunch provided will be “Pop’s Sandwich” a local sandwich. The two sandwiches that will be provided are:
Freebird: which consists of turkey, bacon, swiss, cranberry, lettuce, and mayonnaise.
Twin Peaks: which is ham, turkey, bacon, swiss, avocado, mayonnaise, mustard, special dressing, onions, pepperocini, lettuce, and tomatoes.

During the meeting we will be discussing:

Spring Level 1 “Meet and Greet” – This is about the organization of the “Meet and Greet” for the incoming level 1 students. This will be a large scale orientation day rather than a “1 hour meet up” like we’ve had previously and we need student input and volunteers to help us make this event happen! Such as Clinical tips, GWAR info, segment 3, iLearn, touring the SFSU campus, Kaplan, what to call the event, etc. This will be the bulk of our meeting this Friday.

NSA Presence at the Pinning Ceremony - We will be looking for volunteers to help with this event. For anyone who is handling their Pinning Ceremony fundraising I’d suggest going to this! I did last semester and it offers tons of helpful advice and tips! These level 5′s did just plan theirs after all.

BRN Sunset Letter for Approval – For those of you who do not know, the Board of Registered Nurses has not been renewed. The BRN Sunset Letter for Approval has nothing to do with SFSU’s accreditation.

Sweaters – Alek will discuss with us the new fundraising opportunities we will have and what new items we will be selling! Come stop by and sneak a peak at our nursing gear!

NSA Funding – Albert has done some amazing research about how the NSA can earn some more money.

Discussion of Election Times – The NSA is going to finally debate and vocalize our opinions and lay it all out on the line about our thoughts and what we want to do about next year’s Nursing Student Association elections. We be holding off placing a vote until the General Meeting on Dec. 2nd but please stop by and give your input about when elections should be held!

Thanks! See you all on Friday!

The Board of Registered Nurses (BRN) is making a visit to the SFSU’s School of Nursing this year. This is extremely important because the BRN determines whether or not the school is accredited for meeting nursing school standards and if future students will be able to sit in for the NCLEX exam. It may seem disconnected from you, but SFSU’s reputation is an aspect that will carry on with you throughout your careers. The faculty are searching for students from Level II – V and GMSN in order to speak with a representative from the BRN. There will be no faculty present, only the reviewer. There is only one BRN reviewer here for 3 days, and it is essential she receives a holistic view of the School of Nursing at SFSU. Since our school’s accreditation is at stake, this is NOT a forum for grievances, but a time for constructive critique, leadership, and diplomacy. We hope you will consider participating in your educational and career future.

The BRN scheduled meeting times are:

Level II: Monday, November 7, 2 – 3 pm in BH 346C

Level III: Monday, November 7, 1 - 2 pm in BH 346C

Level IV: Monday, November 7, 3 – 4 pm in BH 346C

Level V: Wednesday, November 9, 11 am – 12 pm in BH 376

GMSN: Tuesday, November 8, 5 – 6 pm in BH 348
